Do You ever Read the Artist Comments?

As a beta tester, I have had the privilege to see dA's workings on v7 Beta 2. There are some interesting things coming our way and I'm personally excited about them.

However, I do want to bring to your attention one idea they are thinking of implementing which is hiding the artist's comment box.

They are hiding the artist's comment box by adding an invisible 'more' button which can only be seen when hovering. Artist's comment boxes will have a small preview of the artist's comments and a 'More' button to click to view the whole comment box. It will now look like this:





There could be many issues with this, but the following, stated by Echostar08 here: dalinksystem.deviantart.com/bl… are some of them:

• 1. Unless the 'More' button is clicked, only a small preview of the artist's comments are viewable. Even those who want and enjoy reading the artist's comments may not go to the trouble of clicking the more button.

• 2. Unless the 'More' button is clicked, thumbnails of some of your other work you may have there will be hidden from view.

• 3. Stamps discouraging art theft and important copyright information won't be viewable unless the button is clicked.

• 4. For many, the artist's comments are actually a part of the artwork itself. eg : there may be a poem or prose piece added. Or maybe song lyrics or a link to a song. They won't be seen unless the button is clicked.

• 5. The stock resources used for photomanipulations, which credits those artists and also gives them exposure, won't be viewable unless the button is clicked.

• 6. Many dedicate their art as gifts. Those wonderful gift dedications will remain hidden unless the button is clicked.

• 7. Having to click the 'More' button will encourage 'fave and run' even more. What if the comment has a at the end because the deviant put something funny there. That would normally catch someone's eye. But it won't since it won't be VISIBLE unless the button is clicked.

• 8. Anything at all that you want people to see in your artist's comment box will not be seen unless that button is clicked.

• 9. What about groups like dALinkSystem that encourage displaying other people's art in their artist's comment box as a means of exposure? eg.

  1. Go to your Edit settings.
  2. Go to Beta Testing.
  3. Under Become a Beta Tester check the little box 'I understand and would like to be an Official deviantART Beta Tester.'
  4. Click OK.
